Getting Here

Once you reach Vancouver Island you can drive to Bamfield from either Victoria or Nanaimo.

By Car
From Victoria:

  • North on Hwy #1.
  • Take the exit to Lake Cowichan, which is north of Duncan.
  • Past Lake Cowichan, enter a network of gravel roads (~120 km).
  • Roads are marked, and should be no trouble. Follow the power lines.
  • Make sure you have a spare tire and lots of gas.
  • Travel time: 4 hours.

From Nanaimo:

  • Head north on the Island Hwy.
  • Take the exit to Port Alberni: Hwy #4.
  • As you arrive in Port Alberni, take left-hand exit to Bamfield.
  • Follow signs to Bamfield. From Port Alberni, should take 1.5 hours.
  • ~77 km is gravel road. Road is in good shape. Make sure you have a spare tire and lots of gas.
  • Travel time: 4 hours.

Several companies offer charter flights to Bamfield, and recommend the following depending on where you are flying from.

BY BUS
The West Coast Trail Express leaves Victoria and stops in Nanaimo on a daily basis, going to Bamfield. The bus operates May to September. (250) 477-8700
